As I am sure you are aware, it is tax season. You have from now until 31 October to submit your tax return. While we would recommend you use one of our highly capable Diga consultants, we would like to explain how to submit your own Personal Income Tax should you wish to do it on your own.

Step 1: Log in to eFiling

Go to www.sarsefiling.co.za.
On the top right-hand corner, you will see Register and Log in.
Log in using your username and password. If you haven’t logged in already, then you’ll need to register an account.

STEP 2: Generate your ITR12 tax return

Click the Returns tab.
Click Personal Income Tax (ITR12)

Read the information pop-up as it is important info.

STEP 3: Income Tax Work Page

You will then find yourself on the Income Tax Work Page, where you’ll see a summary of your tax return for the year. This page also provides you with the ability to get a preliminary calculation of your tax liability.

Under return type, click ITR12.

STEP 4: Set up the sections of your return

You will be asked a couple of questions in order to build a return that is specific to you personally. However, you only need to update the information if your tax affairs have changed over the past year – your ITR12 return will be customised with the same fields that you requested last year.

To add extra income and deductions sections to your ITR12 return, select the relevant options on the wizard.

Once you are done, click Create Form.

STEP 5: Complete your return in eFiling

Now that you have set up your return correctly, you need to take the ITR12 tax return and copy the values across into your eFiling return online.

Once you’re happy that you have copied all the amounts, checkboxes and descriptions correctly into your eFiling return, click Save Return.

A confirmation message will pop up. Click Continue to return to the INCOME TAX WORK PAGE.

Before filing your ITR12 return to SARS, check your return for accuracy using the tax calculator function. This function provides you with an indication of your expected assessment. If the result is significantly different from what you are expecting, check your return as you may have made an error in completing it.

To use the tax calculator, click Save Return and click on Tax Calculator.

STEP 6: Submit and you’re done!

If you’re 100% happy, click File Return. Your ITR12 return has now been submitted to SARS.

It seems easy enough! But there are a number of things that you could miss or neglect to submit, which may lead to an audit from SARS, harsh penalties or a reduced tax refund. Contact us if you need any assistance for submitting your Personal Income Tax return!
